FedEx Fred W. Smith “FWS” 777F Released

Born in 1944, Frederick Wallace Smith graduated from Yale with a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1966, then was commissioned in the Marine Corps serving until 1969. Fred served two tours of duty as a platoon leader and forward air controller where he received the Silver Star, a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. He later founded Federal Express in 1971.

Fred passed in 2025, and in his honor FedEx blazoned their nearly new 777F N899FD with his initials “FWS” on the belly and overflew the FedEx St. Jude Championship golf tournament, a tournament that FedEx partnered with for nearly 40 years.
