The model kit industry isn’t just surviving—it’s in the middle of a massive, youth-led renaissance! We often hear the same old story: “Kids only care about screens,” “No one likes working with their hands anymore,” and “Scale modeling is a dying hobby.” (I was one of them) But if you actually look at the data for 2026, the reality tells a completely different story.

In this video, I break down the real numbers hopefully waking up the hobby world. From Bandai Namco’s staggering Gundam revenue to the persistent grip of classic automotive culture led by Round 2 and Revell, the community is evolving. We look at how the “Maker Movement,” School Maker Spaces, and high-tech tools like 3D resin printing and Arduino integration are creating a brand new generation of Model Builders.

Whether you’re a veteran builder, beginner or somewhere in between building military armor, a custom car modeler, or an anime fan clipping your very first Gunpla kit, one thing is clear: the future of plastic is brighter than ever!

If it’s “youth led”, show me the youth.
At my local contests, there might be 2-3 youth contestants at best. “Make and Take” tables are virtually empty. A couple of kids at a contest are nice to see, but their numbers aren’t going to replace us late 50s/early 60s birth date boomer generation guys who have maybe ten good modeling years left. I started my grandkids building simple models. Now they have no interest in the hobby. Don’t let the current surge of the industry fool you. The hobby isn’t going to disappear with a sudden “poof”. Nothing lasts forever, though. Enjoy it for what it is now.
