Description: For a while, it was difficult to find a finely detailed kit of the Boeing 727. With CRM’s new tooling of the 727-200, I wanted to see how far I could push my skillset with detailing and finishing. I also wanted to find a bold and colorful scheme to brighten my collection and shelves, and PSA’s 1980s livery offered a great option for this. My family also has deep roots in California, and paying a small homage to this felt appropriate.

In building the kit, I tried a couple of new skills and techniques. Good decal printing of the PSA scheme (especially ones that fit the new contours of the CRM kit) is extremely rare. I chose to mask and airbrush as much of the scheme as possible, working with reference photos, color mixing, and intricate masking to replicate the orange and red cheatlines and bare metal underside. I had attempted pre-shading on previous models, but further pushed this skill to use masking tape to create hard edges at leading edge panel lines and feathered edges at trailing. Finally, the kit offered clear main cabin windows. Using the provided vinyl window masking set and styrene stock, I managed to create clear main cabin windows with varying window shades for very fine detailing that I believe heightens the final look.

Kit Information: CRM Models 1/144 Boeing 727-200. Finished in Mr. Paint white, Boeing gray, oranges and reds, and Alclad II Hi Shine Aluminum. Door, window, and detail decals provided by kit. “PSA” titles and tail numbers by Pointer Dog decals.
