Description: I wanted to depict one of the Japanese Type A submarines used during the attack on Pearl Harbor. I also wanted to display the model on a prototypical carriage used by the IJN to handle these submarines. Finally I took interest in the only survivor Ensign Kazuo Sakamaki.

Upgrades made to the model…
1). 3D resin rivet decals were added to the hull that were missing from the kit model on the fore and aft sections of the boat.
2). 3D resin weld line decals were added to the hull bow section where missing from the kit model.
3) Ceramic wire was used for the stern stabilizer supports.
4). I printed 3D resin turnbuckles to support the rigging lines fore and aft.

For the base I worked with a designer to create a cradle to depict the only type I’ve seen from period photos. I printed it myself, painted with Tamiya lacquers, and weathered with oils.

The platform supporting the cradle and model was made with basswood. I added 3D printed hardware as well. The wood base was mounted on high density closed cell foam which was wrapped with expanded poly for a smooth finish.

The wood case was made from imported Japanese Cedar. A label was created depicting Ensign Kazuo Sakamaki as well as the other submarines sailors who did not survive and whom Ensign Sakamaki was not included.
